Youths vs Brand Re-positioning.

I try not to over flood the world wide web with issues that have already been mentioned by other bloggers or the press; I tend to see things my way and say them the way it ought to be said or done.

The communication strategies employed by agencies representing youth brands have been heavy on my heart in the last couple of days and I will not sit back without mentioning how negatively PR/Adverts coverage are affecting the young minds.

Brand managers must now heed the clarion call to be more sensitive with their PR and marketing; for most of the images and ideas are interpreted to be encouraging rebellious attitude in youths. These days all you see on bill boards are seductive or rebellious images that do not speak well. Am I sounding like an old wacko, who has lost touch of socio-economic changes; then its time for a lil spanking.

When we were kids, our parents will ensure that we get to bed on time, so as to avoid all the rubbish adverts that fly across the screens; but with the emergence of X-factor and all other late night programs/shows, little can one do to keep teenagers off the TV. Now, advert agencies have targeted this popular TV programs to showcase all the dirty and irrelevant materials from their filthy minds. Dont get me wrong, this has nothing to do with the products, its just the way and manner the adverts are created. no morals anymore to learn from.

Some adverts try to make out that they are art. This is usually where advert isn’t connected with the product in any way that you would ever figure out unless you were a contestant on the never-popular game show 3,2,1. For goodness sake, what has romantic scenes and sexy underwears got to do with perfume adverts, or where is the connection with wearing a bikini and selling snacks. Any sane mind would not go for this products, cos they don't identify with the brands idea of communication.

Day in day out, we hear the news of rape, violent disturbances, gun and knife rivalry, under-age drunkards, drug abuse and lots more; yet we wonder if there is a good future for the media industry.

When did our ads become so awful? Once, I'd actually asked a friend who is a copy writer, what he thinks about an alcohol advert boldly displayed  along the road, apparently welcoming people to the town. His response was 'well, visitors now have a clear sign that they are travelling into a drunk town'. no be me talk am o!

My advice would be for brands to invest in role models and icons, who are conscious of emphasizing positive attitudes through their lifestyle, career and attitude. Brand owners/managers should see themselves as being embedded with the responsibility of using their products/service to instilling the much needed change in the society. More-so, brands could encourage their captive audience with sponsored apprenticeships or career opportunities; for as the saying goes 'an idle mind is the devils workshop'.

If we must change the ills affecting youth delinquency in the larger society, then PR and brand managers must look outwards to change their marketing strategy.

Unclear Issues ...

The nudge to write this piece arises as a result of the happenings around the world in the last couple of months. More-so, the recent earthquake that hit the Pacific Ocean nearby Northeastern Japan at around 2:46pm on March 11 (JST) causing damage with blackouts, fire and tsunami. The death toll as at the time of typing this piece is put at 4277 and is expected to hit 10,000.

As my heart goes out to all those who have lost their loved ones in this disaster, my vex is with the leaders in authority. I still cant fathom why certain decisions are taken in this age and time. Despite the battle to save the lives of people in Japan, I listened with dismay as a top energy official in President Obama's cabinet urges regulators to press ahead with approving construction licenses for new nuclear power plants despite Japan's nuclear crisis.

In my curiosity, I searched for the importance of this 'unclear' Nuclear power, and what I found out made me vex the more: does it mean that top scientists would join ideas together to invent a machine that has its disadvantages almost equal the advantages.

Advantages-

  • Almost 0 emissions (doesn't emit green house gases). It produces electricity without pollution into the atmosphere.
  • They can be sited almost anywhere unlike oil which is mostly imported.
  • The plants almost never experience problems if not from human error, which almost never happens anyway because the plant only needs like 10 people to operate it.
  • A small amount of matter creates a large amount of energy... so there is little fear that we will run out of it
  • A lot of energy from a single power plant
  • Current nuclear waste in the US is over 90% Uranium. If reprocessing were made legal again in the US we would have enough nuclear material to last 100s of years.
  • A truckload of Uranium is equivalent in energy to 10,000+ truckloads of coal. (Assuming the Uranium is fully utilized)
  • An nuclear aircraft carrier can circle the globe continuously for 30 years on its original fuel while a diesel fueled carrier has a range of only about 3000 miles before having to refuel.
  • Modern reactors have 2-10x more efficiency than the old generation reactors currently in use around the US.
  • New reactor types have been designed to make it physically impossible to melt down. As the core gets hotter the reaction gets slower, hence a run-away reaction leading to a melt-down is not possible.
  • Theoretical reactors (traveling wave) are proposed to completely eliminate any long-lived nuclear waste created from the process.
  • Breeder reactors create more usable fuel than they use.
  • Theoretical Thorium reactors have many of the benefits of Uranium reactors while removing much of the risk for proliferation as it is impossible to get weapons-grade nuclear materials from Thorium.

Disadvantages

  • More expensive to build the plant,
  • Proliferation concerns. Breeder reactors yield products that could potentially be stolen and turned into an atomic weapon.
  • Waste products dangerous and need to be carefully stored for long time. The spent fuel is highly radioactive and has to be carefully stored for many years after use. This adds to the costs.
  • Waste is now contained in state of the art sealed containers and does not otherwise harm anyone. Radioactive waste that needs to be disposed from the plant is currently in a diluted form. If the fuel were reprocessed the waste would be much less, and more radioactive. The more radioactive the waste is the less time it takes for it to drop to safe levels of radioactivity.
  • Nuclear power plants can be dangerous to its surroundings and employees. There has been a single case where a plant has gone through a meltdown and as a result left people dead and its surroundings destroyed. This was due to an over-capactiy plant in Soviet Russia that had no core containment. All nuclear power plants in the US and elsewhere have cement domes multiple feet thick to ensure core containment.
  • It would cost a lot to clean in case of spillages
  • it can easily go kaboom if is used in the wrong way

For goodness sake, we were surviving without the nuclear power stations; don't get me wrong, I love innovation but not the type that would endanger the lives of people, as with the case presently in Japan where a small crew of technicians, braving radiation and fire, became the only people remaining at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station — and perhaps Japan’s last chance of preventing a broader nuclear catastrophe- nay to Gas emission...

Another unclear power that has been an issue in the past weeks, is the uprising in dictatorial controlled nations. Is power this intoxicating that rulers refuse to submit to the yearnings of the people. If strategic communication as evidently used to oust the Tunisian and Egyptian junta can be applied successfully, then there is power in the mass media.

Every dictator that refuses to listen to the yearnings of the people should be 'Facebooked', 'Twittered','Blogged' and 'YouTubed' out of the government house. Nations that are preparing for elections, should take advantage of the trend and vote credible leaders who will serve their tenure and handover to others.

While some are crying over the lost of their loved ones, investors and business people are wailing over the drop and rise in stocks/shares. This is another unclear issue ... but i'll reserve my comments for the next part.
God bless the world.

Effective Communication: The Masters Way.

It has been taught and discussed in professional meetings/conferences that organisations do not exist in a vacuum, human and material resources are needed to effectively achieve set goals and objectives. I have over time come to the realization that effective communication plays a vital role in the smooth running of an organisation/project/policy/ ... you name it.

In what ever one sets out to do as a vocation, career or a job; be you the employer or employee; as long as you are in the business of reaching out to people, you need to be able to communicate effectively your products and services in the best way possible.

Communication is not completed until the message is received by the other person. Most of us pay more attention to delivering the message, which is the easy part, and overlook the 'receivability' of the message, the hard part.  Communication is hard work.  Drawing inspiration from the communication style of my master and Saviour Jesus Christ {He used parables, made reference to the past, spoke eloquently, touched lives with his words, had excellent choice of grammar and His words will never pass away}   . I implore serious minded people to harp unto the following rules - and soar into success:

  • The very first step one must take before sending out a message is to organize their thoughts well. There are many slips between the other person's ears and your lips; since the recipient(s) of the message will be interpreting it in their own brain, its necessary to KISS (Keep It Short and Simple) in the best possible way to avoid distortion.
  • Some speakers deliver the whole speech without spelling out even once what they want from their audience.  Then they feel unhappy when they don't get the results they expected from their speech. Oh! yes. You are well read and want to impress with pedantic statements, forgetting that people are not mind readers. if you are to pass a message to target audience, try using
  • Remember the saying, "Nobody cares how much you know, unless they know how much you care."  When they feel you really like them, they make an extra effort to understand what you want. Your message should either be solving a problem or at least the nearest solution to an issue.
  • The rule of Interacting.  There are two ears and one tongue, spend twice more time in listening than in speaking.  The more closely you listen to others, the more effective you would be in communicating your ideas to them according to their frame of reference.  It is by listening close to them, that you will know how they think, what their favorite expressions are and how you can completely attract their attention.
  • When you show how your target audience will directly benefit from your message, you are very close to sinking deep into them. To do this, you must clearly highlight the rewards of your offer, and explain how they will improve their life. For example, instead of explaining that a new product is more efficient, you might emphasize how much time or money the customer will save.
  • You also need to be aware of your non-verbal signal. The spoken word is but a small component of communication, it constitutes of only 7 percent of the message, the other 93% is non-verbal.  If you mean to assure people of the authenticity of your statements, but your face, body and your voice is conveying, "you are just dull,"  which means of communication do you think will get conveyed?  Match your gestures,  body language, voice tone, and other non-verbal behavior with your words.
  • Walk your talk.  Match your actions with your words.  If you say something and then do another, your action will be received as the real message and not your spoken words.
As our faces are different, so are various preferences for both communicating with others and interpreting the communications from others.  Numerous models have been developed which describe how to recognize an individual's preferred style of communicating and what strategy to use in communicating most effectively with them. Whatever style you end up using, never fail to communicate without taking into cognizance the Masters way.

TV Ads: Doing It Better.

Finally the blog bug has caught up with me. I have been reading and commenting on other peoples blog and have deemed it fit to bare my mind on MY own blog.

For the last three(3) days, my 2yr old son has become so obsessed with the GOCOMPARE commercial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvqzx1bA488&feature=BF&list=QL&index=3 running on television stations around the UK. The obsession is so much that I began to wonder if its the song, or the character in the advert that has caused the attraction, for a child of his age would not go to the internet to find out what the advert was selling.

The point is this: why spend so much money on adverts that doesn't clearly spell out the features of the product or service. Why cant creative agencies come up with clear-cut options rather than promote complexities. Advertising can also serve to communicate an idea to a large number of people in an attempt to convince {not confuse} them to take a certain action.

More worrisome these days is the manner at which cosmetics adverts are done. There is a lot of nudity at display. C'mon guys, if you must sell your products via TV commercials, please please please!!! save the future by taking away the naked bodies from the screen and stop invading public spaces, such as schools, which is a form of child exploitation.

I challenge copy writers to think out of the box and come up with beautifully thought strategies/propaganda techniques that will positively attract attention, engage minds, trigger emotions, and change what people think. All of which can lead to sales. Or votes. Or clicks.

Lastly, guys lets be honest with our vocabs{keep it real}. If the product temporarily deals with the issue, then do not go OVERBOARD by saying it solves the issue. so many people have been misled by these adverts and the Ad agencies should be blamed.
